Poetry
Wordplay is an odd, difficult-to-describe spoken word radio show that has built up a considerable listenership in the nearly three years it has been running on WJCU. It opens with a ten-minute monologue by Cleveland Arts Prize winner and JCU English professor George Bilgere. The monologue has been described by listeners as "surreal," "hysterical," "moving," and "insane." Then Bilgere is joined by English Dept. colleague Steve Hayward. The two of them do a kind of poetry version of "Car Talk," reading and discussing timely, interesting poems. The remainder of the show is a grab bag of local and nationally known poets reading their work, "found sound" poems, and more. Definitely worth a listen. You won't hear anything else remotely like it on the radio.
