Cycling is both a sport and an industry that, pardon the tortured metaphor, is by its nature, cyclical. As riders, we mark the beginning of a new season by longer days and warmer temperatures, and continue along the annual path, marked by increasing fitness and milestone rides and races. For cycling manufacturers and retailers, a new season starts as the rider’s season is winding down. September is the time when products are introduced, and decisions are made that determine what we’ll see in our local bike shops and online next spring.
And so this week’s Outspoken Cyclist focuses on the upcoming U.S. cycling trade event: Interbike, to be held in Las Vegas September 16-20, 2013. First up is a conversation with Pat Hus, Director of Interbike, about this year’s show, including how cycling enthusiasts can, for the first time ever, officially walk the show floor on Friday, September 20th.
In the second half of the show, Chris Smith of Lazer Sports, maker of helmets and eyewear, joins us to talk about Lazer’s sponsorship of the women’s races at Cross Vegas, which takes place on September 17th (during Interbike). With Lazer’s participation, there will be prize money for the Elite Women’s race equal to the men’s race!
